The Journey On

A solo path by songwriter and guitarist Jodl Gazvoda.

The album The journey on represents a new stage of Valhala as we knew it. Previously, Valhala's music was the sonic and musical expression of four, sometimes five "dwarfs", but now, in its fully evolved form, it has become the solo path of just one – Valhala's leader, principal composer and exceptional guitarist Jodl Gazvoda. At a certain point in Valhala's journey, its members realised that as a group they had done everything they could, and each of them chose his own path. But Jodl Gazvoda chose the path to which Valhala had brought him, and he remains faithful to that path; he remains faithful to his music and to himself, and we can say that he himself still IS Valhala – just as he always was.

His solo project represents a major step forward and upward. The music has developed and grown with him – or he with it – becoming even more pure, subtle and rich; moreover, he has given it an entirely new dimension. The Journey on is no longer merely an instrumental album. Of course, its instrumental side remains exceptional, powerful and always surprising, sometimes like a deep emotional current in which the colours of passion, dreams and desires alternate, while at other times it is filled with dark stars and questions to which one must find one's own answers.

The entire project is exclusively his own work: he is the only musician involved, and through his exceptional mastery of various stringed instruments achieves a complete sound – while also being the author of all the compositions. With three exceptions. On his solo album we find three songs that we already know. These are Something and Here comes the sun by George Harrison and May you never by John Martyn. And as we have already said, Jodl Gazvoda takes the instrumental performance a step further: for the first time in his long musical career, the foremost warrior of Valhala colours and shapes his musical expression with vocals as well. He presents three familiar songs that are very dear to him in his own way, exactly as he feels them, and in his voice we can also hear his belief in what he sings. And there is more! In two of his own compositions, he presents not only his music, but also his voice and his words, as the lyrics are largely his own, or were created based on his ideas. The songs The Story and Tired warrior perhaps reveal his inner portrait and the path he has travelled better than any others, while the entire album is a true crystallisation of the musical experiences and paths along which he has been climbing for years and years – and one thing is certainly true: this is his long and successful journey forward – the journey on!
